Plaza de Mayo

I hold vivid memories of stories of the desapercidos (the disappeared) young people at hands of the Argentinian military in the 1980s. The Madres de la Plaza de Mayo still convene on Thursdays--now many of them grandmothers who through extensive DNA testing have reconnected with their biological grandchildren who were raised by military families. When I go to the plaza last night I discovered there was a whole new(er) round of protestors, veterans from the Malvina invasion in 1982 who served for upwards of 17 months and were never given veteran benefits. For the last 1000 days, they´ve held an encampment to raise awareness of their plight....
